| The Bright Families Project provides Sex Education to youth in San Diego County through a variety of programs. Classroom Education We offer multi-week classes, free of charge, to middle and high schools in the county. One of our instructors will come to your class for a specified time each week and teach a comprehensive curriculum including the benefits of abstinence, the consequences of unplanned pregnancy, and an overview of anatomy, STDs and contraceptive options. Using a mixture of lectures, group activities, demonstrations, and question/answer times, students leave our classroom-based programs with more knowledge about contraceptives, the long-term effects of their choices, and resources in the community to help them make the best choices for themselves. Boy's Groups Using a 12-week state-sponsored curriculum titled, "Draw the Line/Respect the Line", middle school boys learn about how to draw and respect their personal line regarding sex, drugs, and gangs, as well as an overview of STDs and the potential consequences of having sex before they are ready. Through the use of group activities, lectures and discussions, students complete this program with a better understanding of why and how to make good choices and what resources are available in the community to help them. Mentoring Once students complete one of the above programs, they are eligible to enter our Mentoring program as a mentee. They are assigned an adult volunteer mentor who will spend six months with them. Mentors are trained to help solidify the sex education learned, answer questions, create goals, write responsibility plans, and spend social time together as a role model. |
