Responsibility Plans

T
here are seven Responsibility Plans the mentor and mentee will fill out together, covering seven different areas of personal responsibility:

° Family Planning
° Financial Support
° Positive Relationships
° Family Health Care
° Parenting
° Developing My Child’s Future
° Giving Back To My Family

The purpose of these plans is to provide an opportunity for mentees to dream about what they want for their future, make goals for themselves, and discuss what they will need to do to achieve these goals.  They are intended to be a springboard for conversations regarding these topics, allowing mentees to see choices and opportunities they may not have thought of, as well as emphasize their role in finding the support they need and making their dreams come true.

These plans will help broaden the information given in the reproductive curriculum and incorporate it into the mentee’s short and long term goals.

Mentor’s Role

The role of the mentor in this process is to make sure the mentee understands the topic and assist them in dreaming, focusing and understanding the steps needed to achieve their goals/dreams.  It is not a mentor’s role to impose their dreams or goals on the mentee. These goals or dreams should be specific to the individual and should include short term as well as long term steps for achieving these goals/dreams.  Many of these plans may overlap depending on the individuals goals/dreams and plans for achieving them.

Mentor’s Responsibility

Mentors will be given cards to fill out with the mentee. These will be kept by the mentee as a reminder of their personal goals. The mentor will report this information on their monthly report and will include the goal/dream and the plan for achieving it on the report

These should be completed by the fifth month. In the sixth month the mentor will review these with the mentee to see which steps have been accomplished and report this on their monthly report.  These can be done in any order, although the Plan for Family Planning is a good one to start with as it clarifies many of the other plans.

The following are samples of questions and ideas that may be helpful.

Family Planning: Do you want to have children? How many? At what time in your life? (age, before or after school/college, before or after marriage, before or after a career)? How can you achieve this? What methods? (abstinence, contraception…) Where will you obtain these methods (visit to clinic)?

Financial Support: How do you plan to support your family? What type of job or career do you want? Where will you go to look for employment? What type of training is needed? Where will you go to get trained? Are there any budgeting issues? Savings plans?

Positive Relationships: What kind of relationships do you want? What are the characteristics of these kinds of relationships? With whom (family, friends, boyfriend/girlfriend, husband/wife)? What do you need to do to make these relationships possible (communication, boundaries, types of people chosen for relationship, balance, self care)?

Family Health Care: What is your dream for your family’s (or future family’s) health? What type of health care plan? How obtained? How will you provide preventive care for your family, including yourself (through regular checkups, immunizations, dental care, healthy nutrition, exercise)?

Parenting: What do you feel is involved in being a successful parent? How will you work with the other parent to provide a father and mother figure for your child? What will you do for discipline? Where will you learn this? What parenting classes are available to you?

Developing My Child’s Future: What are my dreams for my child (education, experiences, values, activities) What will you need to do to provide these for them?

Giving Back To My Family
: What do you want to share with your family? Is there anyone you can be a role model to? How can what you’ve learned help them? How will you share this information with them? How can you strengthen the ties to your family?
