BRIGHT Families matches over 100 teens a year with responsible adult role models. We are always looking for new mentors so that we can meet the large demand in San Diego, and we need your participation!

Mentoring is a positive experience for both the mentor and the mentee. Our mentors get to develop a positive, meaningful relationship with a child that can add significant value to their lives. In addition, we provide many opportunities to socialize with other mentors and mentees, and to meet new people and make new friends. Mentors also find that they’re more satisfied at work and at home, and they learn valuable interpersonal skills they can use on the job or in their personal lives. Mentoring is a great experience for anyone looking for more personal satisfaction and fulfillment in their life!

To become a mentor, you must meet the following requirements:

  • You must be able to make a six-month commitment to the program.

  • You must be able to spend AT LEAST four hours per month with your teen.

  • You can’t be involved in a CPS case or have any past felony convictions.

  • You must attend two trainings (an orientation and a curriculum training) and complete a background check.

Steps to becoming a mentor:

1.  Complete and return a Mentor Application Form (under the "Forms" tab above) either by fax or mail
2.  Attend a one hour program orientation and a three hour training session.
4.  Schedule an interview with a Mentor Coordinator.
5.  Submit names of 3 personal references for a reference check.
6.  Provide a copy of a current Driver's License and auto insurance (if you plan to transport the youth).
7.  Submit fingerprints for a DOJ background check.
8.  Become a BRIGHT Families mentor and meet your new mentee!!!
